Senior Lawyer - Estate Planning

Margot has over 40 years’ experience working in the legal industry in the areas of estate planning, deceased estate administration, property and commercial law.

Prior to joining Dimarco Garland Lawyers, Margot operated her own law firm in Newcastle.

Margot takes the time to understand our client’s family and business objectives in order to ensure that our client’s estate plan properly reflects the requirements of our client and the future needs of their family. 

In collaboration with our Commercial team and other business advisors such as financial planners and accountants, Margot ensures that our client’s estate plan and business succession planning are complimentary to one another in order to obtain the best outcome for our clients, their family and their business. Margot understands the importance of integrating trust structures, superannuation and insurance policies within estate planning objectives.

Margot also understands the importance of developing an estate plan that continues to evolve and change as our client’s family and businesses grow, change and develop.

She has significant expertise in relation to the following areas of practice:

  • Wills (including asset protection, testamentary trusts and family provision claims;
  • Powers of Attorney;
  • Appointments of Enduring Guardian.
  • Probate

In addition, she regularly advises executors of deceased estates and beneficiaries on specialised matters including family provision claims, capacity issues and general administration of estates.

Margot has completed additional academic study in estate planning law completing components of the post graduate College of Law – Masters Course in Wills and Estates.

Margot previously worked for the Trustee Companies in Sydney where she was involved in assisting high net worth clients with their estate planning needs including asset protection and testamentary trust wills, Powers of Attorney and Enduring Guardians.

Recently, Margot was engaged by the University of Newcastle Law School to assist with the setting up and operation of the Older Persons’ Legal Clinic which, amongst other things, serviced many clients with their estate planning needs. During her time at the University of Newcastle, Margot lectured in property law and provided practical legal training to law students including in estate planning.

Margot also previously lectured, tutored and assessed students in areas related to estate planning including Succession Law at the University of New England. At that time, Margot was also the course marker for the then Corporate Directors’ Diploma Course.

As a result of Margot’s wide and varied experience, she understands each of our clients’ personal and business needs and is able to advise them on the best options to ensure that their estate planning objectives are achieved.
